Coordinated movement of multiple mobile sinks in a wireless sensor network for improved lifetime

چکیده
Sink mobility is one of the most effective solutions for improving lifetime and has been widely investigated for the last decade. Algorithms for single-sink mobility are not directly applied to the multiple-sink case due to the latter’s specific challenges. Most of the approaches proposed in the literature use mathematical programming techniques to solve the multiple-sink mobility problem. However, doing so leads to higher complexities when traffic flow information for any possible sink-site combinations is included in the model. In this paper, we propose two algorithms that do not consider all possible sink-site combinations to determine migration points. We first present a centralized movement algorithm that uses an energy-cost matrix for a user-defined threshold number of combinations to coordinate multiple-sink movement. We also give a distributed algorithm that does not use any prior network information and has a low message exchange overhead. Our simulations show that the centralized algorithm gives better network lifetime performance compared to previously proposed MinDiff-RE, randommovement, and static-sink algorithms. Our distributed algorithm has a lower network lifetime than centralized algorithms; sinks travel significantly less than in all the other schemes.

A multiple criteria algorithm for planning the itinerary of mobile sink in wireless sensor networks
The mobile sink can increase the efficiency of wireless sensor networks. It moves in a monitored environment and collects the network nodes information. Thus, by the sink we can balance the power consumption and increases the network lifetime. Determining path of the sink's movement is usually modeled as an optimization problem where finding optimal solutions require collecting value of all the...
متن کاملEnergy-Saving in Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Optimization Sink Movement Control
A sensor network is made up of a large number of sensors with limited energy. Sensors collect environmental data then send them to the sink. Energy efficiency and thereby increasing the lifetime of sensor networks is important. Direct transfer of the data from each node to the central station will increase energy consumption. Previous research has shown that the organization of nodes in cluster...

Mobile sensor networks rely heavily on inter-sensor connectivity for collection of data. Nodes in these networks monitor different regions of an area of interest and collectively present a global overview of some monitored activities or phenomena. A failure of a sensor leads to loss of connectivity and may cause partitioning of the network into disjoint segments. A number of approaches have be...
متن کاملCoordinated and controlled mobility of multiple sinks for maximizing the lifetime of wireless sensor networks
We define scalable models and distributed heuristics for the concurrent and coordinated movement of multiple sinks in a wireless sensor network, a case that presents significant challenges compared to the widely investigated case of a single mobile sink. Our objective is that of maximizing the network lifetime defined as the time from the start of network operations till the failure of the firs...
متن کاملAn Efficient Routing Algorithm to Lifetime Expansion in Wireless Sensor Networks
This paper proposes an efficient network architecture to improve energy consumption in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The proposed architecture uses a mobile data collector to a partitioned network. The mobile data collector moves to center of each logical partition after each decision period. The mobile data collector must declare its new location by packet broadcasting to all sensor node...
